Advanced Lighting Team

"Advancing the development and market adoption of energy efficient lighting products"

The Advanced Lighting team is focused and passionate about conducting research and supporting the market development and transformation of energy efficient lighting products. Since nearly 20% of all energy used in the United States is for lighting, adoption of energy efficient lighting products hold the promise of helping the nation conserve a significant amount of energy.

Advanced lighting technologies have the potential to reduce U.S. lighting energy usage by more than one half and contribute significantly to our nation's climate change solutions. The Advanced Lighting team acts as a catalyst to drive research and development breakthroughs in efficiency and performance, and to equip buyers with the information they need to successfully apply energy efficient lighting solutions.

To accomplish the goals associated with market adoption of Advanced Lighting, the team has developed strong expertise and capability in the following areas:

  • Lighting products performance measurement, evaluation, and reporting
  • Development of technical education materials that are used to educate product developers and inform buyers in support of their decision making
  • Development and leadership of stakeholder networks that include energy efficiency organizations, utilities, state and local energy offices, and lighting trade groups for the purpose of educating and informing using targeted outreach materials.
  • Development of standards – provide technical assistance and support to a network of standards setting organizations. In addition to technical assistance, organize and lead workshops to facilitate coordination and collaboration among stakeholders
  • Development and leadership of energy efficient lighting design competitions to incentivize industry to develop more energy efficient products. (e.g. L-Prize, Next Generation Luminaires Competition)
  • Deployment and demonstration of energy efficient lighting products in a wide range of applications. The demonstration results are documented via reports and articles to provide valuable lessons learned on the areas that are performing well and the areas that need work or further development.
  • Development of stakeholder consortiums that are focused on sharing technical information and experiences related to advanced street and area lighting demonstrations and serves as an objective resource for evaluating new products on the market intended for those applications.

While the team has been focused for the past several years on Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies, Lighting controls and their interactions with other systems are receiving increased attention.
